The Karnataka High Court has temporarily stopped the investigation against Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal. He had made controversial remarks about Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who was arrested in a gold smuggling case. The remarks were seen as offensive and led to a police complaint being filed against Yatnal.

Yatnal challenged the police complaint in court. He argued that the complaint was not filed by Ranya Rao herself but by someone else, Akula Anuradha, and that she did not have permission from Ranya to do so. Yatnal also said that his statements, which were made in public, were not intended to insult Ranya or any woman. He explained that he was talking about ways to stop gold smuggling, not about Ranya’s character.

Yatnal admitted his words were in a rough style of Kannada spoken in northern Karnataka, which might seem offensive, but he said there was no intention to disrespect the actress. He also suggested that the complaint was made to stop him from revealing the names of two Ministers in the Legislative Assembly.

The court will look into the case further, but for now, it has paused any further legal action against Yatnal.
